Language Central students are seeking to better their communication with their children's teachers and doctors, to understand simple directions to shops and public transportation, and generally obtain skills to better participate in the community.
Making a difference in Northeast Minneapolis community is as simple as ABC!
Assist with ESL classes. ESL classes meet every week from Monday to Thursdays throughout the morning, afternoon, and evening. These classes are filled with immigrants from the Ecuadorian, Mexican, Oromo and Somali populations of our community. Volunteers will begin by observing the classes, then later (if desired) be given the opportunity to lead a class of their own. Other duties include registering new ESL students through a rather lengthy intake process that allows Language Central to assemble demographic information.
Become a guest speaker. In addition to regular ESL classes, advanced skills are greatly improved when given the opportunity to talk with others from the community. Here is your chance to meet and interact with immigrants and refugees in our community. Lead a discussion about your life, your occupation, your hobbies or simply your experience in Minnesota while the ESL teacher is present in the classroom. The experience is rewarding and meaningful when you share your story and learn about theirs.
